Retro-Acid is Kozzmozz' second oldest concept and celebrates the infamous Roland TB-303 bass machine. Thé party for the fans of the 303 and it’s unmistakable Acid sound, the machine that formed and shaped electronic music and keeps influencing it. It surely did so in the early days when we loved to dance to it ! The current Acid revival proves that we still do today so let's see where it all came from.
In 1987 Chicago lived it's second explosion of creativity with the birth of the Acid House scene when famous house-producers start using the legendary Roland TB-303 bass machine. Acid House is characterized by the TB-303's acid bass sequences, and a 4/4 beat, creating a psychedelic effect by connoisseurs compared with the effects of LSD, also known as acid. And that’s how the genre got it’s name.
Acid House soon finds it’s way to London where in 1988 it becomes the most important new musical genre during the famous ‘Summer of love’.
From that moment Acid has always been present in electronic music. It conquered the rest of Europe and the world and numerous productions and labels followed. Acid keeps influencing the music scene today but it’s the older Acid Sounds that we’ll be digging into to on this new edition of Retro Acieeed !
And therefore we have invited two acid pioneers. One from it’s originating source Chicago and one representative from the English acid house scene. A Guy called Gerald put British house music on the map with the classic Voodoo Ray. Many LP’s followed in which Gerald also ventured into jungle and drum ‘n’ bass. This year he released a new album - Proto Acid : The Berlin Sessions. Having literally influenced generations of music-makers with an incredible discography that’s grown incrementally deeper since the ‘80s, the Manchester UK native and now Berlin resident executes the infectious 71-minute jam with a masterful meticulousness. Asked to describe the album’s sound, Simpson says, “To me it’s proto acid; it’s how I feel house/techno music would have sounded if the whole rave thing hadn’t happened in England. …. So when I say proto acid I’m saying this stuff has direct lineage to Chicago and Detroit in the mid-to-late 80s.” Right up Retro Acid’ street !
Mike Dearborn grew up with Chicago’s early house radio-stations and has been producing since the early Trax label days. He soon found a home with Saskia Slegers Djax-Up-Beats label resulting in a heavy dj-schedule. Mike has remixed artists such as The Advent, Felix the Housecat, Gary Numan, Hardfloor, Joey Beltram, Robert Armani and Steve Stoll. He also runs his own labels Majesty Recordings and Majik Gruuv Records.
The guests will be joined by resident Spacid from Funky Green Aliens, Fuse resident and fellow pioneer Deg as well as underground talent K-os from Apparatus and Bug Klinik.
